Albert Chapman Elementary
Original Cost: $4,872,406
Opened: 1989
After his military service in the War of 1812, Dr. Albert Chapman worked as a schoolteacher in Circleville, Ohio. The money he received from teaching was used to pay for the cost of attending medical lectures in Cincinnati. However, he acquired his practical medical knowledge during hands-on training from his uncle, Daniel Upsom, who was a doctor in Worthington. In 1830, a cholera epidemic broke out, and the 34-year-old Chapman moved to the Dublin area and became its first doctor. He traveled through the countryside on horseback attending to the sick and needy. If the patient was severely ill, he would remain in the household until they were better. As a wedding present to Chapman and his daughter Lucy, John Sells built a fine limestone house with deep, walnut-lined windows on High Street that was a landmark for many years. After 1840, Dr. Chapman no longer depended on the practice of medicine for a living and turned to real estate and lending money. At one time, he owned more than 1,000 acres in the Dublin area. After his retirement, Dr. Chapman was instrumental in bringing Dr. Eli Morrison Pinney, Dublin’s second doctor, to Dublin.
District enrollment when the building opened was 7,166 students.
The building is 63,400 square feet in size.
